Yesterday, Dec. 29th, a bunch of us went to the LDS Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake as a Relief Society gathering. We sorted a thousand pound bale of clothing into men's, women's, and children's clothing. A lot of what we sorted was brand new and donated from local stores. The rest was what the Deseret Industries would not take. D.I. only takes the top 15% of what's donated. If there is even a button missing or if it's too wrinkly, the D.I. sends it to the H.C. This sign we're pointing to is where the next shipments of clothes are going. They put them into 100 pound bales, place them in a machine that squeezes out all of the air and then that machine bales them with a waterproof cover and a strong cording. They end up looking like white bales of hay. The Red Cross and other organizations deliver most of the bales. The Humanitarian Center sends out clothing, hygiene kits, neonatal kits, wheelchairs and quilts. We toured the facility and then went off for a quick bite to eat.
